Further information about Moon-Cal-Notes.pdf The full title of the document is: My Notes on Don Hutton's Moon Calculator. This is a document that I wrote in 2005, when I audited an astronomy class at Monash University, taught by the (now deceased) Don Huttton. The document describes and analyzes a tool for predicting the dates of any lunar phase. He devised a number of such tools for both educational and practical use in the astronomy labs. This one is a mechanical device made of several concentric cardboard discs which could be rotated with respect to one another to align the different markings on each one. The tutorial exercise consisted of cutting out the discs and putting the instrument together and then making use of it, following the printed instructions. Working out how it worked from first principles was not a requirement of the tutorial exercise, but it was a task I set myself, and as a kind of side-effect of doing so, I produced this explanatory document and gave it to Don. Don, a highly respected academic, was an enthusiastic, dedicated and much loved teacher at Monash, who will be sadly missed by all who knew him. http://adm.monash.edu/records-archives/archives/memo-archive/2004-2007/stories/20070620/don-hutton.html Several years later, the university got in touch with me to ask if they could use it in an academic report related to the course, which, of course, I agreed to. Dr Susan Feteris, the original course-coordinator of the astronomy course in which Don lectured, wrote to me: In March this year we honoured him as we named our new observatory: That was a lovely gathering, and his family were thrilled and touched. Plus it was a happy event for all of the staff and former students who miss him, too. Don's fingerprints really are all over our teaching laboratories, he had an enormous (and always positive) influence. http://www.monash.edu/moca
